In our orthodontic clinic in Valencia we are specialists in all children, including those with autistic spectrum disorder. To date, it is still being investigated whether or not there is a greater presence of malocclusion in these cases. A greater type of Type I malocclusion is detected.
Some academic works point out that 93% of the cases of children with ASD present problems in the mouth that require the use of orthodontics, while others lower this percentage to a little more than 60%. But none of them indicate specific malocclusions associated with autism.
What has been detected is a set of bad habits and behaviours related to childhood and autism. Some of them are breathing through the mouth instead of the nose, inserting the fingers in the mouth, an abuse of sucking objects, etc. All these habits affect the position of the teeth and the maturation of the jaw.
In our orthodontic clinic we are specialists in children. As we said in the introduction to this article, we are in all children. That is why we specialise in children with ASD, and not only in diagnosing what orthodontics they need, but also in guiding them correctly towards the use of good dental health practices.
If your child has autism, he or she will be in good hands at our orthodontic clinic.
Our practice is a magical place. We have space rockets in our clinic, toys and lots of colour. Our team is friendly and very caring. Everything is thought of to make your child feel comfortableSo that he likes to come and visit us and, when we are with him, we can teach him to breathe, not to bite. And everything, of course, little by little, with lots of love and patience.
And we are not only thinking of him, but also of you. We know that it is hard to care for and live with an autistic child.. It's a full-time job that can easily overwhelm you. That's why at our orthodontics clinic in Valencia you'll find friends to talk to... and also a few treatments designed to help mums and dads relax 😉
