What problems occur in the formation of our face as a result of mouth breathing? Is it important educating children about nasal breathing What if they breathe a lot through their mouths, and should this attitude be corrected?

At the orthodontic clinic in Valencia Ziving Badía we are not only concerned with providing the best treatment for your children in terms of the use of braces or Invisalign. One of our priorities is to educate in proper dental health and hygiene and good habits that will prevent the child from having problems in the future.

One of these habits is mouth breathing. Numerous studies have pointed out that continuous oral breathing causes dentofacial deformities derived from this breathing. Of course, orthodontists have the tools to correct them, but the best thing is always prevention.

Malocclusions and alterations arising from this issue are detected by primary care paediatricians and corrected by orthodontists. One of the reasons why the child is breathing only through the mouth is because he or she is suffering from a chronic obstruction of the ASV (upper airway), i.e. a respiratory obstruction syndrome that needs to be corrected.

Poor mouth breathing leads to maxillofacial growth disorders

Some of the features that sufferers of respiratory obstructive syndrome exhibit include:

  • They have a slightly tilted backward face
  • The shape of the face is somewhat longer and narrower than normal.
  • They find it difficult to seal their lips together
  • The plane of the jaw is somewhat depressed.
  • Crossbite, open bite or jaw compression
  • Etc
